Best starting words for 4 letters

Four-letter words spread their letters more evenly than long words. A appears in 35% of the list, E in 34%, S in 33%, and O in 27%, and no letter is in more than about a third of the words. The engine's strongest openers are EARS, SALE, and SEAR. They each use four of the five most common letters. Because each tile is a quarter of the word, a green tile at four letters is worth more than a green tile at seven.

How hard is a 4-letter puzzle?

The four-letter list holds 3,903 words, so one good guess often leaves fewer than a hundred and two guesses usually leave a handful. The risk at this length is the opposite of long words: many short words differ by a single letter, such as SALE, SOLE, and SAME. When the list is down to a few words that share three letters, the Smart Guess Assistant may suggest a word that cannot be the answer but tests the differing letters all at once. That is often the fastest route to a solve.

  2. Type that word into the first row above. Letters per word is already set to 4.
  3. Click each tile until it shows the puzzle’s color: gray for absent, yellow for wrong spot, green for correct spot.
  4. Submit the row. The possible answers and the best next guess update together.
  5. Play a suggested word, bring back its colors, and repeat until one word is left.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a word I know missing from the four-letter list?

The list is the public-domain ENABLE lexicon, which leaves out proper names, abbreviations, and most slang. If a real answer is missing, the puzzle used a different dictionary. Change a tile color to double-check your marks before assuming the word is absent.

Can I use the solver for three- or two-letter games?

Yes. Type 3 or 2 in Letters per word. The lists are short at those lengths: 972 three-letter words and 96 two-letter words.
